A three-and-a-half-month-old baby Ugandan boy has survived surgery to remove four extra limbs protruding from his body, the result of what’s known as a parasitic twin. 

On May 27, the boy, named Paul Mukisa, was born with the condition which occurs when an incipient twin fails to fully develop and separate into a distinct embryo. 

His parents rushed him from to the nearest regional hospital only to find doctors there ill-equipped to help them. He was then transferred to Mulago Hospital in the capital, Kampala where doctors discovered what appeared to be an extra chest and that Paul’s heart was in the left side of his body and his liver in the right, the opposite of where they should be. The ghost twin was also sharing his pelvic bone.

After waiting three months to let his body develop so they could safely operate, a team of surgeons led by Dr Nasser Kakembo operated on August 18, successfully removing the torso and limbs of the parasitic twin. It took just three hours. 

Nearly a month on, and Paul is recovering well. He’s expected to leave the hospital in two weeks.
